Your understanding of the basic terms in this stair glossary are necessary before you proceed with your stair building project.

It is very important to thoroughly grasp all the meanings of the words associated with stair building for several reasons.

  • You'll know
  • You'll be better able to follow the local building codes and make sure you are complying, with no future problems with the controlling body in your area.
  • You'll be able to follow construction tips so as to not waste your time or money

a series of steps or flights of steps for passing from one level to another

flight

a continuous series of stairs from one landing or floor to another

landing

a level part of a staircase (as at the end of a flight of stairs)

newel

a post at the foot of a straight stairway or one at a landing

nosing

the distance that a tread extends past the riser

rise


the vertical dimension from the top of a finished stair tread to the next

riser

the upright member between two stair treads

run

the horizontal dimension from the nose of one finished stair tread to the next

stairway


one or more flights of stairs usually with landings to pass from one level to another

step

a rest for the foot in ascending or descending: as one of a series of structures consisting of a riser and a tread

stringer

a vertical support for the treads of stairs

total rise

the vertical distance from the origin of the stairs to the top surface

total run

the horizontal distance that the stairs cover from the face of the first tread to the end of the last tread

tread

the upper horizontal part of a step or the width of such a tread
