How To Build Stairs...

Tools...

If you want to do any job right, such as stair building, you need the right tools... more than tools to make and assemble, but tools to calculate and draw for the design phase, and information tools to help keep you on the straight and narrow path to success of accomplishing your dream.

If you want a very good guide to carry around with you for each step of the process, you might try Stairs : The Best of Fine Homebuilding. This book brings together 30 articles from the back issues of Fine Homebuilding magazine. Written by master craftsmen, architects and engineers about their own work, these articles will guide you through projects ranging from straight and simple to curved and complex ones. When you go to the link above, you might look at the list of other books which may be of help to you.

If you use Windows 95 / 98 / NT / 2000, you may wish to check out 3D Home Architect Deluxe 4.0. This is a low cost drafting program to help with those complex calculations for stair building, in particular, those with curves.

For a straight staircase, there is a simple calculator available online. Give it a try if you like.

You can also, of course, use it for designing other rooms to add to your existing house, or even design an entire house if you like. It won't replace the services of an architect or architectural designer. But it sure will help with the dimensions you need for your stairway.
