Next, you should get a copy of your area building code requirements for stairs and stairways.

Some areas actually have their building codes online. You can run a search on Google, AltaVista, Yahoo and other search engines by entering +"building codes" +"your city".

You can contact your local library to see if they have the codes themselves or if they know an online address. Perhaps they will at least have the following set of books.

This set of 3 volumes is "dedicated to the development of better building construction and greater safety to the public by uniformity in building laws." These books contain the basic rules and regulations upon which most local building codes are based.
